Rosemary-Infused Salt Spray for Hair Recipe

This 100% naturally toxin free and aromatic salt spray is designed to give your hair beachy waves while also nourishing it with the beneficial properties of rosemary. The addition of essential oils provides a pleasant scent and additional benefits for your hair and scalp.

I make this rosemary salt spray every few months, mainly for my boyfriend Rob. He uses it in his hair daily to give a little texture and also as a preventative treatment for dandruff. I personally don’t keep this in the fridge because I have found that it doesn’t go bad in the amount of time it takes to use up. This is probably due to the salt and anti-bacterial/fungal properties of the essential oils. You may want to refrigerate yours though, depending on the temperature of where you live.

Rosemary

One of my favorite herbs, rosemary has a beautiful and clean smelling aroma. Recent studies show that rosemary oil can help improve the rate of hair growth and helps prevent hair loss. The rosemary plant itself has anti-fungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial and astringent properties. Drinking rosemary leaf tea is also known to be beneficial for the cardiovascular system. I add it to my hair spray because of it’s beautiful and clean scent, but also for its medicinal properties as well.

Aloe Vera

Another of my favorites, aloe is truly an all-purpose herb. Good for the body both inside and out. The skin of the leaves are laxative internally and the mucilage found in the leaves are great for the gut and the skin. It’s extremely moisturizing and cooling for irritations both inside and out. My favorite brand of aloe is Stockton, however they only ship by the half gallon which can be a lot to manage at one time. I love this brand because they don’t add any preservatives and they ship frozen to you to keep it fresh.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cup distilled or Reverse-Osmosis water

  2. 1-2 sprigs fresh organic rosemary (or 1 tablespoon dried rosemary *affiliate link)

  3. 1-2 tablespoons Himalayan pink salt *affiliate link (adjust based on desired "saltiness" and texture). You can also use Sea Salt or any other naturally-occurring salt.

  4. 5-10 drops organic essential oils (like rosemary, lavender, chamomile, or geranium for calming and soothing properties; or peppermint, tea tree, or eucalyptus for an invigorating scent)

  5. Optional: 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel or organic jojoba oil (*affiliate link) for added moisture

Instructions:

Rosemary Infusion:

    1. In a small saucepan, bring the distilled water to a boil.

    2. Once boiling, add the fresh or dried rosemary.

    3. Reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

    4. Remove from heat and allow the rosemary to steep in the water until it cools down to room temperature.

    5. Strain out the rosemary, discarding the sprigs or dried leaves and retaining the infused water.

Making the Salt Spray:

    1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve the Himalayan pink salt in the rosemary-infused water. Stir well until the salt is fully dissolved. If you're using aloe vera gel or jojoba oil, add it now and mix well.

    2. Once mixed, add in your chosen essential oils and stir again.

    3. Transfer the mixture to a clean spray bottle using a funnel.

Usage:

  1. Shake the bottle before each use to ensure that all ingredients are well mixed.

  2. Spray onto damp hair, concentrating on the lengths and ends. Scrunch or twist your hair with your hands to help form waves.

  3. Allow your hair to air dry.

  4. Style as desired or leave as is for a natural, beachy look.

Storage: Store in a cool, dark place. Since this spray contains no preservatives, it's recommended to use it within 1-2 weeks. You can refrigerate it to prolong its shelf life, but always check for any signs of spoilage before use.

Note: Conduct a patch test before using any new product on your scalp or skin, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies. Adjust the amount of salt based on how much texture you desire; more salt will give a more "beachy" feel, while less salt will be more moisturizing.
