Essential oils are powerful plant medicines, concentrated to somewhere around a hundred times the strength of the plant they came from. A drop of oregano oil is the aromatic fraction of a substantial pile of leaves with everything else stripped away. That concentration is exactly why they show activity in a petri dish, and it is also why they burn skin, why they overwhelm a liver, and why the margin between a working amount and a harmful one is so narrow.
They are also close to unregulated. Purity, potency, and adulteration vary widely between suppliers with no independent verification required, and much of the research supporting daily use is funded by the companies selling the product, which is a low-confidence source no matter how the study is designed. Several common constituents also show endocrine-disrupting activity, and the exposure model being marketed, which is diffusing all day in a closed house and applying to skin daily, is not one that has been studied for long-term safety in humans or animals.
There is a small published trial in which twenty dogs with Malassezia dermatitis improved on a commercial blend containing oregano and marjoram essential oils at half a percent each. It is worth knowing about, and it is one small study of one proprietary product, and half a percent works out to roughly three drops per ounce of carrier, a precision most people are not hitting in a kitchen. Ingredients worth limiting
Raw feeding is a commitment and I am not going to pretend otherwise, so kibble is a reasonable choice as long as you read the label. These are the ingredients I look to minimize, with the reason for each stated as accurately as I can:
- Industrial seed oils. Soybean, corn, canola, sunflower, safflower, and generic "vegetable oil" are common in kibble as a cheap fat and calorie source. They are extracted under high heat with chemical solvents, they oxidize readily during processing and storage, and they push the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio far higher than anything a dog would encounter eating whole animals. That ratio matters for skin specifically, since the fats a dog eats end up in the skin lipids and influence the inflammatory signaling in that tissue. Look for named animal fats instead, such as chicken fat, beef tallow, or fish oil.
- Corn. High in starch and among the more common protein sources dogs react to. Corn is also the grain most associated with aflatoxin contamination, and aflatoxin has been behind several fatal pet food recalls.
- Wheat. A frequent allergen in dogs, and the grain I would limit first for a dog with skin problems. Most US wheat carries glyphosate residue, both from pre-harvest desiccation, where the crop is sprayed to dry it evenly before combining, and from drift and shared storage and transport infrastructure. USDA's grain inspection service detected glyphosate in more than 40 percent of the wheat samples it tested across four consecutive years, and independent testing has found it in every wheat-based food product sampled, with pasta running 60 to 150 parts per billion. Organic is not a complete escape, since the USDA organic rule itself allows residues up to 5 percent of the EPA tolerance, which works out to 1,500 parts per billion for grain products, specifically because environmental contamination is unavoidable. My read is that this is a large part of why so many people who react to wheat in the US eat it comfortably in Europe, where pre-harvest glyphosate use is far more restricted, and the same logic applies to a dog eating it daily for years.
- Soy. A common allergen. On the thyroid question, the study most often cited fed dogs a soy isoflavone diet and found no meaningful effect on thyroid function, since that concern comes from cat research and does not transfer.
- Potatoes and sweet potatoes. Starch-heavy fillers that displace protein. Sweet potato carries more nutrition than white potato, though both are still mostly carbohydrate.
- White rice. Refined starch with little else. Brown rice has more fiber and minerals and slightly more arsenic, so neither is worth building a diet around.
- A single protein used for years. Protein allergies develop through repeated exposure, and rotating between two or three proteins, or seasonally, reduces the odds of a dog becoming reactive to any one of them.
- Meat meals and by-product meals. Rendered at high heat from variable inputs, where plain named meat is the better line item.
- Artificial colors. Several are linked to behavioral effects and gastrointestinal irritation, which would be reason enough on its own. The part that gets me is that dogs are dichromats, so they see the world in blues and yellows and cannot distinguish red from green at all. Those cheerful little red and green kibble bits your dog is being sold on look like the same drab yellowish brown as everything else in the bowl. The dye is aimed squarely at the person holding the wallet, which makes this all risk and no reward, and the dog cannot even see the point.
- Artificial flavors. Manufacturers are not required to disclose the compounds used, which makes tracing a reaction impossible.
- BHA and BHT. Synthetic preservatives worth avoiding when mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, citric acid, or ascorbic acid do the same job.
- Added sugars and sugar substitutes. No nutritional reason to be in dog food, and xylitol in particular is severely toxic to dogs, so check any human yogurt or peanut butter before it goes in a bowl.
- Legumes as top ingredients. This one is unresolved. The FDA opened an investigation in 2018 into dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils, and other pulses, and in December 2022 the agency ended public updates, stating the reports do not supply sufficient data to establish a causal relationship, with independent analysis finding no correlation between national DCM rates and grain-free sales. My position is that peas and lentils appearing at the top of an ingredient panel are usually there as cheap protein bulk, which is reason enough to look elsewhere.
- Peanuts and peanut butter. Legume family, high in fat, and among the crops most prone to aflatoxin.
Probiotics and the Gut Connection
Adding probiotics is one of the more promising interventions for a dog with recurring skin problems, and the veterinary evidence has grown considerably in the past few years.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of probiotics as an adjunct in canine atopic dermatitis found benefit across multiple strains including Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus paracasei, Bifidobacterium longum, and Enterococcus faecium. A 2025 study using a two-strain blend in dogs with atopic dermatitis reported reduced skin inflammation, less itching, lower allergy markers in blood, and measurable shifts in both gut and skin microbial populations over sixty days. Earlier work found that puppies given Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG early in life showed reduced allergic symptoms years later, which suggests timing matters.
Several Lactobacillus species also show direct antifungal activity against Candida in laboratory testing, producing lactic acid and other compounds that inhibit fungal growth. That work is mostly in gut and mucosal contexts rather than skin, so treat it as supporting rather than as a reason to expect a probiotic to clear a paw infection.
Why glyphosate belongs in this conversation
Glyphosate kills plants by shutting down a single enzyme. Plants build three amino acids, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan, on an internal assembly line called the shikimate pathway, and glyphosate jams one step of that line so the plant can no longer make them. It starves from the inside over the following days, since those amino acids are required to build proteins and a cell cannot function without them.
Bacteria run that same assembly line. Most gut bacteria have to manufacture those three amino acids themselves rather than absorbing them ready-made, which means glyphosate does to a bacterial cell what it does to a weed. The enzyme gets blocked, protein production stalls, and the population stops dividing and dies back. Glyphosate was patented as an antimicrobial for this reason, well before anyone was concerned about it turning up in food.
What makes this matter for a dog is that the effect is lopsided. Not every species carries the same version of that enzyme, and small structural differences determine whether glyphosate can bind to it and shut it down. When researchers tested it against poultry gut organisms in the laboratory, the beneficial species turned out to have the vulnerable version, with Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, and Bacillus all ranging from moderately to highly susceptible, while Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, and Clostridium botulinum carried a version glyphosate binds poorly and kept growing at concentrations that suppressed the others. Knocking down one group while the other continues unimpeded leaves the survivors free to expand into the space and food supply that opens up, and a gut that was balanced ends up tilted toward the species you least want. One caveat worth stating: a later study found the effect largely disappeared when the bacteria had plenty of free aromatic amino acids available in their surroundings, since a cell that can absorb those amino acids from its environment no longer needs the blocked pathway. How much of the laboratory result carries over to a living gut at real-world residue levels remains an open question.
What follows practically is that a dog eating a grain-heavy commercial food is taking in a low, daily, years-long dose of a compound that suppresses the exact bacteria you want and leaves the ones you do not want alone, which makes deliberately putting the good ones back a sensible thing to do rather than a fashionable one.
It is also an argument for meat. Glyphosate is water-soluble and does not accumulate in fat, so an animal that eats it absorbs a fraction and clears most of the rest through the kidneys within a day or two. Muscle tissue consistently tests low or shows nothing at all, while what does linger concentrates in the kidney and liver, which are the tissues doing the processing. A food built mostly on meat rather than on grain is a lower-residue food almost automatically. If you feed organ meats, and I think you should, that is the one place to spend the extra money on pasture-raised and grass-fed sourcing.
Practical probiotic options are plain unsweetened whole-milk yogurt or kefir with live cultures, starting with a teaspoon for a small dog or a tablespoon for a large one and increasing slowly. Kefir carries more strains and is usually better tolerated by dogs sensitive to lactose. Check the label for xylitol, which is fatal to dogs. If dairy does not agree with your dog, a veterinary probiotic supplement with named strains and a stated CFU count works just as well.
Whole-Food Fats for Skin Health
Omega-3 fatty acids are among the better-supported nutritional interventions for canine skin, working through reduced inflammation and improved barrier function, and they alter the fatty acid composition of the skin itself, which is relevant given what the yeast is feeding on.
My preference is to get them from whole foods rather than extracted oils. A capsule of fish oil is a single fraction of a food, pressed and refined and prone to oxidation on the shelf, where a whole sardine brings the fat still packaged with the protein, minerals, and fat-soluble vitamins that came with it. This is how a dog would have encountered these fats before any of it came in a bottle.
What I rotate as toppers, introduced one at a time in small amounts:
- Sardines. The single best option on this list, and the one I use most. Choose canned in water with no salt and no oil added, or buy them frozen whole. Trader Joe's carries the canned version, and most Asian groceries have whole frozen fish in the freezer section. Small oily fish are also low on the food chain, which keeps heavy metal accumulation down compared with larger species.
- Other small whole fish. Mackerel, herring, anchovies, and smelt all work on the same principle. Whole is better than filleted, since the fat and minerals are distributed through the whole animal.
- Egg yolks. Fresh raw yolks from pastured hens are one of the best whole-food sources of omega-3s, choline, and fat-soluble vitamins available, and they are cheap and easy to add.
- Grass-fed and pasture-raised meat. Higher in omega-3 than grain-finished, and a passive improvement if you are already feeding meat. Fattier cuts carry more of it.
- Organ meats. Liver, kidney, and heart bring fat-soluble vitamins and minerals that support skin repair, and heart in particular is a good whole-food source of taurine and CoQ10. Source these from pastured animals where you can, for the reason described above.

Part of it is that several seeds carry meaningful phytoestrogen loads, flax most of all, and estrogen has to be conjugated and cleared by the liver, which is a load I would rather not add for a benefit I can get more efficiently from a sardine. The dog's conversion of plant-based ALA into usable EPA and DHA is poor anyway, so seeds are an inefficient route to the fat you are actually after.
The one exception I make is sprouted, shelled pumpkin seeds, which carry cucurbitacin and have a mild antiparasitic action that earns them a place in an occasional rotation. Not daily, and not as an omega-3 source.
Ask your vet for guidance if you are adding a fish oil supplement rather than whole fish, since high doses affect clotting and that matters before any surgery.
What This Looks Like in My House
Millie and Vash eat a low-carbohydrate diet, mostly freeze-dried raw with a rotation of toppers, and neither of them has had a paw problem. I do not present that as proof, since two dogs is not a study and there are a dozen other variables in play, including the fact that they are not breeds predisposed to skin trouble.
The dog who taught me most about this was one we rescued when I was a kid. He was itchy over his whole body for years, and he was part Shar-Pei, a breed whose skin folds and barrier function make them prone to skin problems no matter what you do. We fed him a generic supermarket kibble that was heavy on starch and filler, and we treated the symptoms over and over without ever asking what was driving them. Looking back, I think he would have been considerably more comfortable if we had switched him to a cleaner, lower-carbohydrate, legume-light food, dried his feet properly, and worked with a vet on the allergy underneath it. That is the whole point of this article, since the remedies help and the cause is what determines whether you are doing them once or forever.
When to Stop and Call the Vet
- Limping, obvious pain, or a paw your dog will not let you touch.
- Swelling, heat, pus, bleeding, or a foul rather than musty smell.
- Raw or open skin between the toes, or interdigital lumps that keep returning.
- Itching that does not improve after two weeks of consistent home care.
- Any dog on steroids or immunosuppressants, or with diabetes or a diagnosed endocrine condition, where skin infections escalate faster and need proper treatment.
- Circular patches of hair loss anywhere on the body, which suggests ringworm and is contagious to you and your family.
- Sudden intense licking with no prior history, which more often means injury than allergy.
Recurring yeast is a signal rather than a diagnosis. A vet can identify the yeast in a few minutes on a tape cytology, and more usefully can start working out what allowed it to overgrow. Allergy testing, a properly conducted elimination diet trial, and thyroid bloodwork are all things a home remedy cannot substitute for, and herbal and dietary approaches work best alongside that rather than instead of it.

Why does my dog lick his paws so much?
Allergy is the most common reason, usually environmental, sometimes food-related or flea-related. Other causes include yeast or bacterial overgrowth, a foreign object between the toes, a cut or burn, mites, contact irritation from lawn chemicals, pain from a joint or nail problem, and anxiety-driven licking. Licking on all four feet evenly points toward allergy, while licking one favorite spot points toward injury or habit.
Can I use apple cider vinegar on my dog's paws?
Yes, diluted to equal parts vinegar and water, on intact skin, two or three times a week during a flare. Avoid it on any open sore or cracked skin, since it stings. Dry the feet thoroughly afterward, because the drying matters as much as the soak.
What herbs are safe to put on a dog's skin?
Calendula, German chamomile, plantain leaf, colloidal oatmeal, marshmallow root, burdock root, green tea, rosemary leaf, and dried oregano or thyme infused into a carrier oil are all safe in the amounts a dog licks off. Use dried plant material rather than essential oils, and confirm every ingredient in a commercial product is safe to eat before you apply it.
What herbs are toxic to dogs?
Tea tree oil, pennyroyal, wintergreen, sweet birch, wormwood, tansy, and rue should all stay away from dogs entirely. Aloe and yarrow are both on the ASPCA toxic plant list, garlic causes anemia at higher intakes, comfrey is liver-toxic if eaten, and zinc oxide creams and anything containing xylitol are dangerous if licked off. Essential oils in general do not belong on a dog's skin.
Is aloe vera safe for dogs?
Not in a way I would rely on. Aloe is listed as toxic to dogs by the ASPCA, because of the anthraquinones and saponins in the yellow latex just under the leaf skin, which cause vomiting and diarrhea. The clear inner gel is less of a problem, and separating it cleanly is harder than it sounds and nobody supervises their dog every minute. Colloidal oatmeal or a cooled chamomile rinse gives you the same soothing effect without the question.
Does coconut oil help a dog's yeasty paws?
It helps dry and cracked paws and it is safe if licked. On an actively yeasty paw it may not, because Malassezia lives on fatty acids and lauric acid, which makes up about half of coconut oil, is one it can use. During an active flare, either skip oils and focus on the vinegar soak and drying, or use fractionated MCT oil instead.
What does a yeast infection on dog paws smell like?
Musty and slightly sweet, often described as smelling like corn chips or stale bread. It usually comes with rust-brown staining on the fur between the toes, red and thickened skin, and greasiness. A foul or sour smell with discharge is more likely bacterial and needs a vet.
Will changing my dog's food stop the paw licking?
Sometimes, and it is more likely to work if the trigger is a food the dog reacts to rather than the carbohydrate content by itself. A properly run elimination diet trial, meaning one novel or hydrolyzed protein and nothing else for eight to twelve weeks, is the only way to know, and casual food switching tends to muddy the picture rather than clarify it.
Is my dog licking his paws from anxiety?
Possibly. Licking that stops when the dog is exercised or engaged, concentrates on one spot, and happens most in the evening or when left alone points that way. The complication is that behavioral licking damages the skin and creates a secondary infection within a couple weeks, so by the time most people notice, both problems are present and both need addressing.
How often should I clean my dog's paws?
A rinse and thorough dry after every walk during allergy season removes pollen and allergens sitting on the skin, and is one of the more effective non-medical things you can do for an atopic dog. Outside of allergy season, drying after anything wet is enough.
Can I use these remedies on my cat?
Not without your vet's approval. Cats metabolize many plant compounds poorly, essential oils in particular, and they groom off far more of a topical product than dogs do.
